Sugar-darling

“I love a literal hidden gem. That was my thought when I walked out of Piccalilli on Friday night, back down the unassuming alleyway nestled between the chain pubs and takeaways on Long Row. It somehow makes it feel extra special.”

Nottingham Post

“The alleyway, the staircase up to the restaurant, the open pass, the skylight windows and wooden beams... it's all very familiar to food lovers who knew the space as Kushi-ya and its acclaimed Japanese flavours.

But that's where similarity ends. Newcomer Piccalilli is all about the best of British with a twist.”

“It's been a long-term ambition of Dan to open his own restaurant. The menu will revolve around British/European small plates. He will be quitting his job at The Nelson in Burton Joyce in four weeks time to focus on getting the premises ready for opening.”

Love at 1st bites

“You may know Dan from his day's at Larwood and Voce where he famously won the title for Best British Roast Dinner in 2015, he also had a stint at Iberico World Tapas, World Service (sadly no longer trading) as well as Michelin starred pub The Pipe and Glass Inn in Yorkshire and more recently The Nelson in Burton Joyce. His latest venture will be the long awaited Piccalilli which will soon open in the old Kushi-Ya space which has recently relocated to Low Pavement.”

The Notts Edit

“Nottingham’s food scene has got a little bit bigger, thanks to the addition of Piccalilli — a British and European small plates restaurant in Cannon Court.

I spoke with chef and owner Dan Coles about bringing his previous experiences to his own restaurant, crafting a menu that’s familiar yet different, and why you should pay his cosy place a visit. I also went down and tried it for myself, and — spoiler alert — I had the best ‘toast’ I’ve ever had.”

The Nottingham Post

“The exposed brick walls with dried flower arrangements, candles on every table, and the absence of anything remotely Japanese, announce the arrival of Piccalilli. It's a Thursday night when we visit and we've just walked past Las Iguanas which appears to be completely empty - perhaps everyone's at the Robin Hood Beer and Cider Festival as the city centre doesn't have much of a buzz.”
